Pleasing results at Lurgan College!!!

THE pupils and staff of Lurgan College are celebrating another year of impressive individual and collective examination performances at Advanced Level.

Mr Trevor Robinson, principal of Lurgan College with the top AS level pupils

Principal Trevor Robinson said: “These amazing results are, once again, the strongest possible evidence of the success of the tried and tested Dickson Plan which, for over forty years, has equipped local pupils with the necessary skills to help them fulfil their academic potential.

“For an amazing eleventh year in a row the Year 14 pupils of Lurgan College recorded an over 99.6% pass rate in all subjects offered at A-Level, which compares very favourably with the UK national pass rate of 98%. Many grades A* were also achieved by our high-flying pupils.

“The 86% of A* to C grades is also well in excess of the UK national average of 76.6%. The top grades of A*, A and B were again by far the most common grades, accounting for over 62% of the grades recorded while the UK national average sits at just 52.6%.”

He added: “While, of course, we are encouraged by these very impressive statistics, the most pleasing aspect of these excellent results by far for me is that, once again, the majority of our pupils are now looking forward to taking up their places in their chosen universities and colleges here in Northern Ireland and across the rest of United Kingdom.

“Worthy of particular mention is David Harrison (Bleary PS) who achieved an outstanding four straight As (including two A*s) in his A-Levels – a tremendous achievement by any standard. I am pleased to report that David, as the result of his fantastic A-Level performances, will be taking up his place at Cambridge University in October to read Veterinary Science.”

Mr Robinson commented: “As Headmaster of Lurgan College, I am extremely proud of what the class of 2012 has achieved in their A-Level examinations. I am keen, as ever, to pay tribute to the pupils’ primary schools for their early years education and, to the teaching staff of Lurgan Junior High School who expertly guided the young pupils at Key Stage Three. I also highlight, once again, the dedication and commitment of my own teachers who continually strive to provide the very highest quality of educational experience for the pupils. I also acknowledge our pupils’ very supportive parents who work closely in partnership with the school and who, I have no doubt, are very proud of their young people’s A-Level success.”

In terms of AS Levels results achieved by the Year 13 pupils of Lurgan College at Advanced Subsidiary Level are among the very best ever achieved at this level, boding well for the pupils’ performances in their Advanced Level examinations next June.

The overall pass rate was an impressive 97%, the second highest ever recorded at the College, which is over 2% above the NI grammar school average. The top performer in the year group was Jack Patterson (King’s Park PS) who secured an incredible five grade As in his examinations.

Eleven pupils managed to achieve at least four grade As and 18 in total obtained at least three grade As in their AS Level examinations.
